University College: South Door

University College is the centrepiece of the University of Toronto St. George campus. Located at the north end of King's College Circle, it is an impressive sight when approaching from the south.

This drawing is a study of the main door on the south façade of the building. The door is set a ways back from the main façade of the building, with a series of arches, each smaller than the last, stepping back from the main façade to the wooden door. The door is flanked by three columns on each side set on a diagonal. I thought this would make a good subject for a study using shadows cast on an isometric elevation drawing, as the shadows would show the depth of the stepped arches (without shadows they might appear to be on the same plane). This was a technical challenge that exceeded everything I had done before in difficulty. Despite its small size it took 6 months to complete.
